Hilary and I first met Alan and Ann in 1979, and we have had the pleasure of working together at Reading University and friendship for many years. We'll always remember the most enjoyable stays we had with them in Wales. Alan was a remarkable teacher and his contributions to the university as well as his support of students were outstanding.

Alan introduced me to Food Science when I was still at school! He was a dedicated and inspirational teacher with high standards who taught me a huge amount. He later became a valued colleague and friend.

Dear Alan - a very kind and caring boss. He hired me on a 2 week contract then trekked across campus to look for me and offer me a permanent post - 31 years later I am still in that post. Thank you for always making me consider the family first and thank you for teaching me my computer skills. A true family man and an honest and valued friend. You will be sorely missed.
