I was a colleague of Jo's at Imperial College London. She was only in the department for a short period - perhaps a year? - and this was over ten years' ago. Nonetheless, she made a lasting impression. Alongside her dedication and focus, her tremendous warmth and generosity are the two qualities that immediately spring come to mind when I think of her. Her extensive academic/research achievements stand as testament to the great quality of her work but her legacy extends far beyond that: her great humanity, dignity and compassion, as well as her ever stoic and upbeat nature. have formed abiding memoires.

Jo was an excellent scientist. But to me, more importantly, she was a friend and I will miss her enormously. We collaborated on several projects and her input was always thoughtful and drove our science forward. I learned a lot from working with her. We would often take time to discuss wider issues around academia and Jo's commitment to standup to issues around inequality and the wellbeing of staff and students was inspirational. We have lost a true star and are so much the poorer for it.

I was shocked and saddened to hear that Jo has passed away. Although I hadn't been in contact for some years, I have fond memories of laughter and nights out with her in North Devon. My deepest condolences to her family. Thinking of you all at this sad time. Best wishes, Emily C. Xx

A great colleague and friend who taught me a lot about soil science, compassion, participatory research, and life as an academic. She will be sorely missed at the University of Reading and her legacy will endure.

My interactions with Jo were largely through research grouping meetings and student supervision, but what got me to relate with Jo so easily was how friendly and positive she was and how pleasant to interact with. Clearly fast and sharp thinking, with insightful but tactful comments in meetings. Such a positive and supportive colleague, will miss her dearly.

Jo was a colleague who I came to know through a research project. Though we sat on different sides of the physical-social science divide, I felt that she was always extremely attentive to the social complexities that accompany ecological management. Her work also aided my understanding of the science. I valued her highly as a colleague. She will be much missed by me and others.

I don't think I will ever have enough words to describe how wonderful I think Jo was and for how much she has done for others. Even though she was unwell, she bid and won a huge grant as PI, took on more PhD students and still continued with her other commitments such as the Loddon project. She was an unstoppable force of nature, reading and gaining understanding in subject areas well beyond her field. She was an inspiration both academically and personally. I am so grateful that she was in my life for the past 7 years. She taught us to strive for better, to demand equity not just equality. To not sweep things under the carpet but to stand up for ourselves and others. She wasn't just my supervisor, she was my confidant, my biggest cheerleader and most importantly, my friend. She has been with me through so many big things in my life and for that I will be forever grateful. To say she will be missed is an understatement and my heartfelt sympathy goes to all of Jo's family and friends.
